Did you know there were over 58,000 deer-related crashes in Michigan last year? Be alert! Deer are unpredictable. Take a look at some deer safety tips below.

DEER SAFETY TIPS:

  1. Slow down, eliminate distractions, and make sure all vehicle occupants are buckled up.
  2. Deer are most active at dawn and dusk, but one can appear at any time.
  3. Watch for warning signs that indicate heavy deer traffic areas.
  4. Deer fixate on headlights – flashing them may cause the deer to move out of harm’s way.
  5. If you see one deer cross in front of you, watch for more. One long blast from your vehicle’s horn may frighten the deer away.
  6. If a collision with a deer is unavoidable, brake firmly and stay in your lane. Avoid sudden swerving, which can result in a loss of vehicle control and a more serious crash.

IF YOU HIT A DEER:

  • Get in your vehicle, safely off the road if possible, and call law enforcement. Be prepared to describe your specific location.
  • It’s generally best to stay buckled up in your vehicle. Walking alongside a highway is always dangerous, as you could be struck by another vehicle.
  • Don’t attempt to move an injured deer.

Deer are most active in October through to December, which is the peak deer mating season.
